Meet Gruffalo Granny - The New Addition to the Family 

Coming to a bookstore near you on 10th September 2026, Gruffalo Granny is every bit as iconic as we would expect. She has grey fur, red prickles (compared to the Gruffalo's iconic purple ones), green eyes instead of orange, and she comes complete with a walking stick and a knapsack. She has, as Julia Donaldson puts it, "the grey fur of a slightly more mature gruffalo."

Why This Book Is So Special

In the announcement made live on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Julia Donaldson revealed she'd had the idea "in the cupboard" for years, but it was her own experience of becoming a grandmother — and a campaign by the National Literacy Trust to reverse a decline in children's reading — that finally spurred her to write it.

"I've had this idea for the best part of two decades," she said, "but I've just been so busy writing other things. And now of course I'm a granny myself, so maybe that's what spurred me on."

Illustrator Axel Scheffler, who once insisted there would be no third Gruffalo book, admitted the story was simply impossible to say no to: "One day out of the blue there came a wonderfully clever and inspired new text by Julia. How does she do this? Could I decline? Of course not!"

And with the book shooting straight to Number One on Amazon seven month's before publication, it would seem everyone else is just as excited as we are.

It may be 27 years since the first Gruffalo book but with such a timeless classic, we already know Gruffalo Granny will absolutely be worth the wait.
